The ecosystem of N'Guild values

N'Guild is a cooperative gathering independant active users and engineers of internet tools. The goal of the cooperative is to network and balance an ecosystem of values that are shared by each participant, and that could be used as a basis for the n'guild economy.

values

  • Hard Money
That's the old world money that they produce and count in banks. We will use as reference the GBP : Great Britain Pound, as we'll cooperate with http://opencoop.org for the hard money flows. Some hard pound is necessary for sharing expenses.
    • we'll use Hard Pounds, abr HP for managing hard money flows inside n'guild
    • people are incitated to have a credit of HP, which means that they invest common value inside the cooperative. That will consitute an overall financial garantee for the cooperative.
    • direct transfert of GBP into HP should be possible by simple mean (paypal at least)
    • transfert from HP to GBP should be regulated (to be decided)

  • hardware ressources
    • can be composed of an equivalence to hard money
    • includes the value of the maintenance
    • preserves the initial ownership
    • a 'dealer' money can be used, let's call it dilz
    • adding value is subject to approbation of the community

    example:
providing 100 CD for duplication, will give a credit of 10 HP, plus 10 dilz
providing an old laptop, value 500GBP will give a credit of 500 HP plus 200 dilz
    • The dilz is reflecting the equivalent of a sales benefit, so it's calculated subjectively by the seller, depending the rarity of the good, its level of service in the shipping and after sales, it has to be negociated with a n'guild board of random available n'gineers.
    • the value of the dilz can follow intinctive value-metrics that salesmen known well.
    • the equivalence with other currencies will be fixed by a community decision

  • service facility
    • can be the access to an adsl account, phone line, server, etc
    • using that value is subject to approbation and engagement of at least 3 users in n'guild community, if they cover the backing of that providing (usually the service intermediary is one of the 3)
    • there is a time-based fees usually, and they have to be backed by effective fund contributors on a per case basis
    • each service providing is the occasion of a HP conversion of the GBP equivalent, plus an agreed amount of dilz one time, plus an agreed amount of 'service support' providing, that includes the subjective load of the maintenance of the availability of the service (paperwork, and such).
    • the service support currency could be named Lodz, it is the daily friction of the management of a service. Each service lodz evaluation will have to be publicaly available for everybody can adjust his own estimations.

  • service providing
    • it's almost the same than service facility, but replacing the HP cost by an admin cost, as service is not paid to a third party but included in an already running service in n'guild
    • admin cost should be counted in Wiz, cumulated with Lodz and maybe Dilz

  • support
    • that's time that people give each other. That has to be rewardable in a dedicated currency, called Kiz

  • emergency help
    • for desperate situation, some rewarding currency can be used for advanced help. that is Runz currency.

In order to make the different currencies work together, a common denominator like n`guilden (Compare the former dutch crrencie, gulden)can be used. . Then one KIZ can be one `N`guilden, while Runz might be worth two n`guilden each. One HP can then be three n`guilders. All these ratwes will be calculated according to formulas collectively agreed upon.

In order to decide the amount of decision-making power for each contributor, one can use a system where the total turnover in terms of n`guilden the last year ore any other relevant time-period can be used, similar to the ATP-ranking list for tennis stars etc. This currency can be called decidios.

These suggestions are only starting points, and will hopefully be part of an eternal evolutionary process with many participants.

Complicated?

I get a little bit of headache withall these different currencies. I think it would be easier to have a time based currency, Time Units(TU), and HP, and then just have diferent accounts for the the different kinds of TU,just like in normal book-keeping,where you have one account for harware, one for work, one for support etc. I still suggest one TU is one hour of nskilled work.

If someone makes a very great contribution by solving a problem that others have spends thousands of hours on, he should be entitled thousands of time units for that idea, and that can somehow be counted out by how much work he spared for the total community.

Mose convincedme. But we can still have one hour of unskilled work as a reference, to keep some kind og grounding to the system.

- oh, I would like to add, about time-based currencies.
They are impossible culturally for geeks.

.. because hackers are like that, they like spending short time than
big one, for the same task. And curiously they finish at the end to
spend huge time for such small reductions. The hacker deploys hours
of private cleverness to be able to gain some minutes in a monthly
report.

The overall benefit of that behaviour is proven by 30 years of
evolution. A time-based value system is certainly not compatible to
that way to work.

Any geek has a bad taste in the mouth when he's paid on the time
passed rather than on the real work done, succeeded or failed. Then he
can remain in harmony with his feeling and value it for what it is:
a primary engine.

just wanted to add live feedback :)

Got it but still have problems with currencies.

Nice try Mose but agree with mikael, currencies are a bit hard to remember. Multiple currencies can intruduce kind of fuzzi counting. A unique currency could be better than 3 or 4 differents...

could'nt we have a prefered money so that every prices would be translated into that currency ?
like that you can make business with everybody with one single money , but there remains a lot of differents money

There *is* only one currency...

...the n'guilden: a composite of all the others.

Or, in some ways, the decidios are the final currency.

But, then again, most decisions will no doubt be made by rough consensus and/or by someone simple deciding to take a action, rather agreeing that they will do an action with others and then do it. If you get what I mean

/me thinks mose will at least :)
